What is a virtual serial port?

March 1st, 2013 1 comment

I bought a bluetooth adapter for my Toshiba Satellitem, and my samsung slider has a virtual serial port. What exactly can i do with a virtual serial port? Can i use it to download ringtones on my phone without using the 3g internet?

A virtual serial port is an emulation of the standard serial port. This port is created by software which enable extra serial ports in an operating system without additional hardware installation (such as expansion cards, etc.). Unlike a physical serial port the virtual one can be assigned any name (COM255, VSP33, etc.). It is possible to create unlimited number of virtual serial ports in your PC. The only limitation is the computer performance, as it may require a substantial amount of resources to emulate large numbers of serial ports.

How to text Australia from the UK on an Android phone?

February 7th, 2013 1 comment

I’ve got an Android phone on 3 which doesn’t give me any international texts. and I can’t pay extra for out of package texts because my dad pays the bill and wont let me spend extra on the contract. Does anyone know a way I can text a mobile phone that’s in Australia from my phone in the UK?

The Australian phone isn’t a smartphone and i’m open to paying for a program like Skype or something similar if that would work.
